SUNSAR Symposium & SAR-EDU Course
Stellenbosch, South Africa
9 - 13 October 2017
Strengthening SAR in SA
The third Stellenbosch University Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Symposium was held on 12 & 13 October 2017. The three preceding days was used for a SAR-EDU course presented by lecturers from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and an expert from DLR - the German Aerospace Centre. Topics covered at this course included SAR interferometry and polarimetry. The symposium featured speakers from accross industry and I've learnt of some interesting applications such as ship and oil spill detection around the coast of South Africa.
I find SAR to be a useful tool for remote sensing because of its ability to detect objects that multispectral sensors cannot - such as "seeing" through clouds. I am happy to have been able to attend the short course and symposium as it was a very positive learning experience and networking opportunity.
